Drape Forming
Drape forming acrylic or polycarbonate plastic provides an optically clear part with no tooling mark off. By drape forming your parts, we can provide beautiful non-flat components, shields, and panels that are crystal clear.
The blue part is a shield for research lab equipment, with cleanly bonded seams and the same visual clarity as the starting acrylic sheet.
The face mask is an example of a shape that can be drape formed using impact resistant polycarbonate material, the same material used in making bulletproof glass.
Step 1: The acrylic sheet is heated in an oven until it begins to fold upon itself.
Step 2: Fabric-lined molds hold the malleable plastic to cool.
Step 3: The part takes its general shape without a scratch. Bosses, holes, and other features may now be added to complete the part.
